What does the service provide?

The network access provides students with high speed access to certain York University services. These include: * Web - Campus web pages can be viewed and, through the web cache, external web sites. * Email - Students can access their university email as well as any POP3/IMAP accounts they have elsewhere. Web-mail systems may also be accessed using the web cache. * Central filestore - Access to your central Windows filestore. * Printing - Print to the classroom print queue from your own computer. * Ftp - The web cache also provides access to external ftp sites, and students can use ftp to access the university filestore. * Usenet News - The York University news server can be accessed through the service. * SSH/telnet - SSH and telnet access is allowed to machines on campus, and gateway machines will allow indirect access to off campus ssh/telnet server. The above services are supported.

The following services are provided on a 'best effort' basis and are not officially supported: * MSN Messenger - Text chat client only, not filesharing/video messaging. * Yahoo Messenger - Text chat client only, not filesharing/video messaging. * Skype - Text and voice functionality. * YSTV Web Streaming - Access YSTV's programming via your own PC. More details at YSTV's Homepage What the service doesn't provide. We are not providing a 'raw' network connection. The student network is designed to allow access to the services listed above. It does not provide the levels of access available through a conventional ISP. We explicitly forbid the use of file-sharing programs such as WinMX and Kazaa.

How much does it cost?

The cost of connection to the SNS is included in the price of your accomodation - this enables you to get up and running and soon as you move into your accomodation.

Do I have to set up my computer myself?

Yes. Some documentation is available on the Student Network Service web pages to help you do this, however the Computing Service is unable to set up your computer for you. The Computing Service have set up a newsgroup specifically for the Student Network Service - news://news.york.ac.uk/york.csrv.sns here users can post questions, comments or problems as well as answer those posted by other users of the service. Members of Computing Service staff also read this group and may be able to help with any problems.
