BBC Freshers Guide to York

If you've just found out you will be a member of James College this year, congratulations! I'd like to offer a warm welcome to the best college at York University. Although I'm sure you'll discover that once you get here!

Freshers Week has a wide variety of University and College events during the days and evenings. Most of you will have introductory talks and lectures with your course mates and a few unfortunate students will have their lectures starting properly towards the end of the week. However you still have plenty of time to look around, explore and make lots of new friends. Each day there are activities designed to get your flats and blocks mingling and each night there are two separate events for you to choose from. Non-drinkers don’t need to worry about not being involved, there’s still plenty to do – however a lot of non-drinking freshers from last year admitted they had a great time on the bar crawls and it was an excellent way to get to know your fellow housemates.

Each flat or kitchen in James will have one Mum and one Dad. They are there to make sure freshers have a fantastic week. They'll show you the ropes and all the tricks of the student trade. Always a friendly face and ready for a chat, the Mums and Dads will attend events and enjoy themselves too! There will also be one ‘Grandma’ and ‘Granddad’ for the block, who are JCRC members who help and guide the mums and dads themselves as well as you. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask at the forum or email any of the JCRC.
