Important People about James College
Most of our students enjoy their stay in York and encounter no problems beyond those of normal day to day living. Many students however do encouter problems which they cannot resolve on their own. Many will be minor, some very serious indeed. The university offers avenues of support and a comprehensive list appears in the welfare booklet. Here in the College we have our very own resident welfare team and each year we help students to find solutions to problems that vary from minor difficulties to life threatening emergencies. Our team consist of the following:- College Provost College Administrator ![]() The College Administrator is Sarah Doughty. Sarah very sensibly, lives at home with her family in Dunnington. She can be contacted on (43)4013, sad5@york.ac.uk. College Tutors ![]() Emine Aydal ![]() Ioannis Korkontzelos ![]() Daniel Horsfall The tutors need need to cultivate a working relationship with: the College Facilities Manager; the College Administrator; the Porters; the domestic staff in the College; and the Security Services. Conditions of Service College Tutors shall be appointed by the Provost, normally for a period not exceeding three years, and their appointment shall be subject to ratification by the College Council. Their appointment is normally conditional on their residing (or continuing to reside) in the College. Duties and Responsibilities College Dean Dr Margaret Hearnden ![]() The Dean works with the College Provost and other members of the College Welfare Network to provide welfare support and guidance to members of the College; to be responsible for the general welfare and discipline of students in the College; to act as a mentor to College Tutors; and to help foster community atmosphere in the residence. This post is normally for a maximum period of three years subject to an annual review of performance by a sub-committee of the College Council chaired by the College Provost. The Dean is normally required to be: resident in the College during term-time from weeks 1-10. In order to carry out his/her duties the Dean is requested to be available overnight during term time. Please note that it is the practice of members of the Welfare Network to provide cover for colleagues when required. With the exception of Sarah their services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In an emergency they can be contacted through the Security Centre (43)3333 but for most occasions you might want to contact Sarah, who can be found in her office on the ground floor of G Block, office hours are on the door.
